Guest Blog Post with Kristen Proby (Author of COME AWAY WITH ME) and a GIVEAWAY!

Good morning, everyone! Today, I have a very awesome guest stopping by--Kristen Proby! Her book COME AWAY WITH ME is coming out this Friday, and I'm so happy to participate in her blog tour. I can't wait for you guys to read her book--it's romantic and swoon-worthy and it's smexy. It's so freaking sexy!

Since we're both addicted to music, Kristen and I thought it would be fun if she blogged about the music that inspired COME AWAY WITH ME. And now I'm going to stop rambling so Kristen can take the podium!

We all have a soundtrack to our lives. It changes as we grow and age, but we all have our favorite music: what inspires us, what makes us happy, or sad, or makes us feel sexy. Maybe there’s a song that meant a lot to you in high school, and now every time you hear it, you’re back in that high school gym, dancing with your high school sweetheart, smiling as you remember the butterflies in your stomach.

Music is powerful. I listen to music often while I write, and what I listen to changes throughout the book, based on the mood of the scene.  Sometimes music overlaps from book to book, and sometimes there are songs that I choose just for that special couple or character.

It occurred to me early on while writing COME AWAY WITH ME that Natalie is a huge Maroon5 fan. The ringtone on her phone is Payphone by Maroon5, and there are several scenes throughout the book where Natalie and Luke listen to this band. Both Nat and Luke also enjoy Adele, and Luke in particular, enjoys the Blues.  Luke is a romantic, so when he and Nat are spending alone time together, he often puts something soft and bluesy on the sound system.

The title of the book, COME AWAY WITH ME, was inspired by the song of the same name by Norah Jones. I was listening to that song when I wrote the vineyard scene, not realizing at the time what a pivotal role both the scene and the song would play in Luke and Nat’s lives. The music of the song is exactly right for them: soft, laid back, romantic… and the lyrics. Well, I think they speak for themselves. Here is a snippet:

Come away with me and we'll kiss
On a mountaintop
Come away with me
And I'll never stop loving you

And I want to wake up with the rain
Falling on a tin roof
While I'm safe there in your arms
So all I ask is for you
To come away with me in the night
Come away with me
So romantic, right? And perfect for my Luke and Natalie. You see, these two never expected to fall in love, ever, with anyone. And then they found each other, and they just… fit. They found safety with each other, for their own individual reasons. They have fought their own demons, but when they are together, those demons don’t seem too tough to deal with. So that’s why this song is their song.
I thought it might be fun to attach a playlist here of the songs that I listened to while writing COME AWAY WITH ME. I hope you enjoy it, and I hope you enjoy Luke and Natalie’s love story.

    1. I would say I love that Kristen's talks about music setting a mood, as I still have songs that take me back to my high school days. My BF and I still call each other when at random when we hear them on the radio and just put the phone to the speakers and smile!!

  23. "It changes as we grow and age, but we all have our favorite music: what inspires us, what makes us happy, or sad, or makes us feel sexy." I really feel this is true. I do tend to still love the music that I listened to in HS, have even got my nieces & nephews to love the 80's hair bands & hard rock of my youth!
